Intaglio/Collagraph

College - Upper Level

Below are teaching examples and student work from a Intaglio printmaking course at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I created the syllabus and was the Instructor of Record.

Course Description

Studio course in the techniques of creating artistic images on and printing from etching plates. Techniques such as dry point, line etching, soft ground, and aquatint are applied. The resolution of imagery aesthetically as well as mastering various printing techniques will be stressed. Color and advanced printing methods are explored in the classroom. Students will explore greener ways of printing using zinc and copper sulfate.

In the Spring of 2020, as I was in the middle of instructing the above intaglio course, the pandemic began and I was met with the challenge of creating an online asynchronous printmaking course to finish out the semester. To accommodate a lack of studio space, equipment and materials, the process had to be changed from zinc and high pressure press printing to collagraphs and hand printing with wooden spoons. Below you will find teaching resources created for students and student work developed from mid March to May 2020.

Student work

The medium of collagraphs pose a challenge in that they are harder to create an exact edition. To accommodate the lack of space, press and my students were creating this work asynchronously, students were encouraged to create artist proofs and experiment with different types of inking and paper wiping. Below are examples of their printing plates and artist proofs. Student used an array of materials to create their plates. Materials include cardboard, soil, matte medium, tinfoil.
